ART DECO EVENT POSTER
The brief for this project was to create a modern event poster using elements from a historical design period.
I chose Art Deco because I find this style interesting, and I felt it would lend itself to a variety of concepts. For the event itself, I chose a student designed fashion show. I knew I didn’t simply want to make an “Art Deco Poster”, but instead to show how the elements of a period design style could be translated into a modern design without losing their historical relevance. Toward that end, fashion seemed an ideal vehicle, as the fashion industry frequently looks to and draws from the past, while always seeking to use those designs in new ways.
I did extensive research on the period to ensure the elements were historically accurate. I wanted to use features that would be subtle, but still recognizable as of the period, even to someone who was not well versed in the history of design. I decided to stay with a limited palette, and, bearing in mind that this was meant to be an event poster, to use simple shapes and strong silhouettes to keep the material readable both at a distance and up close.
Additionally, I made the fashion show a charitable event in support of a local architectural restoration society. While this society doesn’t at present exist, Seattle has a number of Art Deco period buildings, and I felt this idea reflected the important connection between design and community.
