TOWN RESTAURANT WEBSITE

The client for this project was TOWN, a fictional fine dining restaurant specializing in Asian cuisine. Since I had previously designed menu elements for this same client as a student project, I decided to create a site that would be complementary to those pieces.

After researching a variety of fine-dining and other restaurants websites, I sketched a handful of layouts before finalizing one and creating the wireframes in Adobe XD. While I had refrained from using imagery in the menu designs, it was vital that the website feature high-quality photographs in order to attract potential diners. However, I still chose to place a greater emphasis on typography across the site, in order to reinforce the overall brand identity and prevent it from straying too far into the casual dining arena.

While the original client brief has stipulated Majesti Banner and Athelas, a pair of serif fonts, for the brand, after some experimentation, I realized that these were not entirely suitable to a medium outside print. This was particularly the case with Majesti Banner, which had very high contrast and thin forms, making it difficult to read online. In the end, I chose to incorporate a new typeface, Soleil, a geometric sans-serif that felt clean and modern, and complemented Athelas. I used Soleil for body copy to aid readability of the menu items, and Athelas for headlines and special text.
